Ted came to us with a desperate problem one day. The years playing and touring with the Tucson based Santa Cruz River Band had taken its toll on the top of his beloved Martin guitar he calls Cecilia. He'd never had the time to stop and protect the guitar which now had such bad wear that he had actually worn all the way through the top. Apart from the damage, the hole also affected Cecilia's sound. He didn't have much time before the next playing job, so he wanted a simple but effective repair. He asked about adding a pickguard to cover up the damage and offer future protection. Ted trusted us to the design and left with a promise that it would be finished within two days.
Guitar preparation
The wear in the Cecilia's guitar top was so deep that it would be impossible to attach a pickguard without providing some support. We attached a support to the exposed guitar brace to ensure that the pickguard would not collapse into the worn top when installed.
Pick-Guard design & Cutting
We experimented with a few different shapes before committing the design to the cutting machine. We always look for shapes that compliment the instrument, without unnecessarily filling up all the space and making it look overdone.
